وَالَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مِن بَعْدِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ - 59:10 [And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”] Ḥashr:10
This āyah holds one of the secrets and a key course of action to overcoming divides and friction within the Ummah and this secret is: Sincere Du’ā`. This du’ā`, specifically.
Not only will it resolve division within different segments of the Ummah but also amongst us – it will eradicate any form of dislike and hatred that Shayṭān incites in our hearts. So if you ever find yourself at differences with another Muslim, your go to solution is this Du’ā`. And remember discord is what Shayṭān does best.
The commentary of Mufassirūn on this āyah is somewhat profound.
The two āyahs preceding this one talk about the Muhājirīn and then the Anṣār. In those two āyāt, Allah lauds the Ṣaḥāba both from the Muhājirīn and the Anṣār for all the sacrifices they made for Allah and His Prophet. (The excellence of the Ṣaḥāba has been preserved with the Qur`ān!) Then this beautiful āyah comes. It addresses all those who have accepted Islām after the Muhājirīn and the Anṣār. Everyone from that time till the Day of Judgement. This could include us! Believe it.
What does Allah tell the subjects of the above āyah I quoted? He commands them to seek forgiveness for the Ṣaḥāba. And then He commands them to ask Him to remove any resentment in their hearts – resentment towards the Ṣaḥāba (after all, the Ṣaḥāba were the crème de le crème of this ummah – a status we will never attain, as much as some human hearts may yearn for this great honour). Also, the subjects of this āyah – the believers – are commanded to ask Allah to remove any resentment in their hearts against other believers. But the context of this āyah gives priority to making du’ā` for the Ṣaḥāba.
Thus whoever does not seek forgiveness for the Ṣaḥāba or whoever does not ask Allah to be pleased with the Ṣaḥāba is in fact going against a clear command of Allah. And whoever finds in their heart any resentment against any of the Ṣaḥāba then they have allowed Shayṭān a strong grasp on their heart, and they have incurred the wrathof Allah, and they have paved the path to Hell for themselves.
Allah, the Knower of the Unseen, knew that there will come a nation who will invent what has been invented against the Ṣaḥāba (hatred, accusations, curses, you name it!) and so the believers were ordered to do Istighfār for the best generation of this Ummah; the Ṣaḥāba. Thereby establishing the criteria to elevate the true believers from others.
Raḍi Allahu ‘anhum wa Arḍāhum ajma’īn. (May Allah be pleased with them and may He grant them pleasure.)
The Ummah will not be victorious as long as it fears the Jews, because Allah described them as cowards. So whoever fears them is even more fearful of others:
{ لَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ جَمِيعًا إِلَّا فِي قُرًى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوْ مِن وَرَاءِ جُدُرٍ } “They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls.” [Al-Ḥashr 59:14] لا تنتصر الأمة وهي تخاف اليهود، لأن الله وصفهم بالجبن، ومن خافهم فهو من غيرهم أخوف (لا يقاتلونكم جميعا إلا في قرى محصنة أو من وراء جدر(
